Neck Pain Q & A

What Causes Neck Pain?

The neck’s job is to support the head (which weighs an average of 12 pounds) and facilitate its movement in nearly every direction. These are hefty tasks for the thin set of vertebrae, discs, and soft tissue that make up the neck, also called the cervical spine. Between its weight-bearing function and flexibility, the neck is extremely susceptible to pain and injury. Because it’s such a delicate structure, strong head movements often result in neck pain. Other common causes include poor posture or ergonomics (such as slumping over a computer for hours at a time), degenerative issues (like cervical stenosis), or disease (such as arthritis).

Dr. Swanson conducts a complete physical and neurological examination. He assesses your posture, range of motion, and spinal curvature and alignment, and checks for muscle spasms. In some cases, he may request additional tests, such as an x-ray, CT scan or magnetic resonance imaging test (an MRI), which can reveal bulging discs and herniation. If nerve damage is suspected, Dr. Swanson may order an electromyography (an EMG) to measure nerve response.

Definitely. In fact, many headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, are often caused by muscle contractions in the neck.

All treatments begin with a thorough examination by the chiropractor. Based on those results, Dr. Swanson will design a treatment plan. Often, a variety of modalities is used. Among those that may be included are:

– Cervical manipulation, which is the manual manipulation of the area used to improve mobility, to restore range of motion and increase movement of adjoining muscles.
– Kinesio-taping, which allows your body’s muscles and joints to heal without restricting natural movement.
– Trigger point therapy, which assesses where the source of the pain is, and then fixes the problem.
– Graston technique, which entails the gently stroking the injured area with a special instrument help break up muscle knots and issues with fascia.
